Michael was born a ‘berta boy, but raised in Victoria. He’s not particularly artsy; however, you can nearly always find him working on one knitting project or another: most often warm wool sweaters in the middle of summer, because who doesn’t love a turtle neck on a hot day!
Before medical school, Michael worked as a medical assistant with the Canadian Forces where he spent an equivalent amount of time tending bar and practicing prehospital medicine. He also worked as a medical-surgical nurse in the ED and on the IV team; but you wouldn’t guess it from his current IV skills. After this, he decided that financial masochism is a journey, not a destination, and pursued medical school for the lifelong learning & tuition fees. While working as a nurse and throughout medical school, Michael was drawn to the collaborative environment, the breadth, and hands-on nature of emergency medicine.
If he’s not knitting, you can usually find Michael outside hiking, paddle boarding, or swimming with his partner and dog, Meriadoc Brandybuck. He is absolutely thrilled to spend the next five years spending quality time with his co-residents and roping them into UBC’s newest knitting club
